New Scientist reviews two books, by Naomi Klein and Vaclav Smil, this week. Both look worth reading.

I have to say, it always strikes me as odd that people think perpetual growth is a good idea. After all, isn’t that an accurate description of cancer cell behaviour? Recently in my own work, I have been looking at different sized systems in an attempt to break down the way we see ourselves as separate and unrelated to the rest of the universe. I shall definitely be looking further into Smil. The reviewer in NS writes:
“There is, says Smil, no way of reconciling the preservation of a well-functioning biosphere with the standard economic mantra that “does not conceive any problems of sustainability in relation to resources or excessive stress on the environment”.” (2019)
