Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site, the site collects the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
Comment spam is filtered by Akismet, which processes the name, email address and IP address submitted with any comment. Akismet is operated by Automattic.
A hashed version of your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. A hash is not anonymous – it is derived from your email address and can be matched back to it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/ After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up comments can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue. If you would like a comment and its associated data deleted, contact me and I will remove it.
Media
If you send images to be included on the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Cookies

This data is pseudonymised rather than anonymous: it doesn’t include your name, but IP addresses and cookie identifiers are personal data under UK GDPR. It is used only to understand and improve the site. It is never used for advertising or profiling, and it is not sold.
Subscriptions
If you subscribe to receive new posts by email, your email address is collected and held by Automattic, which operates the Jetpack subscription service. It is used only to send you posts from this site. It is not shared, sold, or added to any other list. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask me to remove you.
Lexicon submissions
Visitors may voluntarily submit proposed entries to a Lexicon – a community-built resource exploring artistic and critical responses to the contemporary landscape – using the contribution form on the site. This form collects the submitted term, its definition, suggested keywords, your preferred credit name (which may be a full name, initials, or anonymous), an optional website or professional profile URL, and your email address.
Submitted data is sent to me by email for review and stored in the site’s database. It is not published automatically. If your submission is accepted and added to the Lexicon, the term, definition, usage example, keywords, and your chosen credit attribution will be made publicly visible. Your email address will not be displayed publicly and is used solely to follow up on your submission if necessary. It will not be added to any mailing list or shared with third parties.
By submitting an entry you confirm that the definition is your own original writing and that you are happy for it to be published on this site with your chosen attribution. You may request removal or amendment of your published entry at any time by contacting me.

Payments
Publications are sold through Stripe. Clicking a purchase link takes you to a checkout page hosted by Stripe, not by this site. No payment details are collected here and no Stripe cookies are set on this site. Anything you enter at checkout is collected and processed by Stripe under its own privacy policy: https://stripe.com/gb/privacy
I receive only the information needed to fulfil and account for an order.

From the 2nd of August, 2026, the EU’s AI Act requires clear labelling of certain content produced using synthetic cognitive tools (commonly referred to as AI). While no equivalent legislation yet exists in the UK, disclosure of this kind is good practice, and consistent with the aims of the projects on this site.
