Having written a fairly longish rant recently I wanted to just store something linked to the way of thinking. As far as I can fathom, so many contemporary writers seem to suggest only way one of ‘being’ is acceptable. This or that way. There is often (in my view) little understanding of evolutionary (and cultural) trade-offs. We all live in cloud-cuckoo-land where some kind of Nirvana is achievable. No wonder everyone is so angry and disappointed. It’s the same as the concept of the ‘good-enough’ parent – when I was in a group years ago many of the other mothers were shocked that we should be aiming for ‘good enough’ and could not accept that perfection was an unhelpful ideal for both parent and child. I think people suffer from this in marriage and politics and art in relation to media. It’s not about accepting shoddiness, it’s about accepting human beings are fallible, life is precarious and difficult and we are complex beings living in a complex reality. The lack of understanding or even valuing complexity is rife – it’s everywhere. I think it is down to the ‘habit of a Cartesian mind’ as Barad writes in Meeting the Universe Half Way.
