I have put two versions of this up here. One is as scanned and then added to, one is cropped to a more formulaic dimension.
I very much like the way the scanner picks up the gap between its bed and the image. Going forward, if I were to make a series of these I would keep them as they fitted on the scanner bed rather than crop down although this might not meet the eye’s expectations of filling an IG frame – but is this for Instagram or something else? But, it is the process of adding to and manipulating, not just the photo’s subject that matters – in fact, it may be that the process’s importance overrides the content. Aimee Green Bourne is an artist I am connected to on Instagram and she posted something the other day which said, “process is performance” which I rather liked. I need to keep this in mind – what I am doing with the scanner is the performance, finding old images and copying them and then changing them. The adding of a colour shape or cutting out, copying or moving an element outside the original frame is also part of this performance – reusing the photo to make it something new. I thought this image was too strong to cut up like I did a couple of the others – I really like their expressions whereas it was easier to cut the more posed faces in the following.
In other news, I have had a disaster with some external drives, including backups …more of that another time when I know if anything is retrievable or not. I have two other backups but they were manual and not up to date or complete. I’m still a bit in denial.
